Trajan, adopted and elevated by the childless emperor Nerva, ruled from 98 to 117 AD. Coming from a family originating in Spain, Trajan became the first non-Italian-heritage emperor. During his long rule he lowered taxes and increased both food distribution and monetary subsidies to the Roman poor. His domestic popularity was further enhanced by military victories and the buildings created to celebrate them.
M. Sersch, displaying his Trajan coin collection online (www.msersch.ancients.info/) notes the record of commemorative architecture left on the reverses of his sestertii: celebratory arches, the Trajan column, and the imperial forum honoring his victory in Dacia. Trajan coins also honor his wife, sister and niece on the observe of coins, an infrequent issue of respect. While Trajan's own portrait remained consistent through his long rule, the reverses of his coins provide a unique window into his time.
